Abstract

In aquaculture, the use of new technologies such as biofloc, aquaponics, and synbiotics has increased the efficiency of aquatic animal production. In this study, five culture systems were designed as experimental treatments for the growth of giant freshwater shrimp, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, post-larvae: 1) biofloc (B), 2) biofloc with synbiotic (BS), 3) biofloc with aquaponics (BA), 4) biofloc, aquaponics, and synbiotics combined (BAS), and 5) aquaponics alone (A). Growth indices and water quality parameters were measured and compared among the experimental treatments.

The highest total body length was observed in treatment BS (74.28 ± 18.63 mm), which showed a significant difference compared with the other treatments (p ≤ 0.05). The highest ammonia concentration was recorded in treatment A (0.77 ± 0.22 mg/L), while the lowest ammonia concentration was observed in treatment BAS (0.61 ± 0.16 mg/L). Nitrite concentration was highest in treatment BS (8.01 ± 7.08 mg/L) and lowest in treatment BA (6.47 ± 6.55 mg/L). Nitrate concentration was highest in treatment BAS (6.11 ± 5.52 mg/L) and lowest in treatment B (4.29 ± 4.09 mg/L).

The results of this study indicated that the combined use of biofloc, aquaponics, and synbiotics in culture systems can improve the efficiency of freshwater giant shrimp production.
