Abstract

The Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment Water Quality Index (CCME-WQI) of the Janabi River water at Hayy City in Wasit Province was assessed and analyzed for overall purposes, drinking water suitability, aquatic life, and the impact of river water quality on the presence and mollusca community. Samples were collected monthly during 2020–2021. Most of the measured variables exceeded Iraqi and international permissible limits.

The index values for overall purposes were classified as marginal category, ranging from 45–48 across all sites, while seasonal values ranged from 37–50, falling within poor to marginal categories. The water quality index values for drinking purposes were classified as poor category, ranging from 40–42 across all sites and from 31–44 across all seasons. The index values for aquatic life were within poor to marginal categories, ranging from 38–61 across all sites and from 61–67 across all seasons, corresponding to marginal to fair categories.

A total of nine mollusca species belonging to seven families were identified. Two species belonged to the families Melanopsidae and Cyrenidae, while one species each belonged to Thiaridae, Physidae, Neritidae, Dreissenidae, and Unionidae. The study concluded that the water of the Janabi River was highly polluted and unsuitable for drinking purposes. It also clearly demonstrated the impact of river water quality on mollusca density and distribution.
