Abstract

Background: Modern healthcare systems face increasing complexity due to aging populations, the rising prevalence of chronic diseases, technological advancements, and the growing demand for safe, patient-centered care. These challenges have highlighted the importance of multidisciplinary healthcare teams in delivering coordinated, evidence-based services that improve healthcare quality while minimizing preventable harm. Effective collaboration among healthcare professionals has become a fundamental component of high-performing healthcare organizations and an essential strategy for achieving better patient outcomes. Objective: This comprehensive review examines the role of multidisciplinary healthcare teams in enhancing healthcare quality and patient safety by synthesizing current evidence on collaborative practice, professional roles, communication strategies, leadership, and quality improvement initiatives. Particular attention is given to the contributions of nursing, pharmacy, social work, and health information management within integrated healthcare delivery. Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted using peer-reviewed publications indexed in major scientific databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, and Embase. Studies published between 2018 and 2026 were reviewed to identify evidence related to multidisciplinary collaboration, healthcare quality, patient safety, team communication, leadership, and healthcare technologies. Relevant international guidelines and reports were also incorporated to provide a comprehensive perspective. Conclusion: Multidisciplinary healthcare teams play a pivotal role in improving healthcare quality and patient safety through coordinated, patient-centered care. Strengthening interprofessional collaboration, investing in workforce development, and leveraging health information technologies are essential for building resilient healthcare systems capable of delivering safer, higher-quality care.
